"Preserving the past for the future"

Who Are We?

The York Pioneer and Historical Society is the oldest historical society in Ontario. Since 1869, the York Pioneers have worked to fulfill the founders’ goal of “preserving the past for the future”. We own and operate Scadding Cabin, Toronto’s oldest house, now on the grounds of Exhibition Place; we hold a spring dinner and a fall bus tour; we publish and launch an annual journal of history articles (included with your membership). For more information about our long history, see the About Us page.

How do you build a log cabin? (02.09.2014)
This 29 minute video shows workers in Finland using tools and techniques that would have been familiar to the team who assembled the Scadding cabin in the 1790s. In the 18th and early 19th century, it was common for neighbours to raise a cabin in three to four days.
