"Preserving the past for the future"
Who Are We?
The York Pioneer and Historical Society is the oldest historical society in Ontario. For almost a century and a half, the York Pioneers have worked to fulfill the founders’ goal of “preserving the past for the future”. We own and operate two heritage buildings: the Scadding Cabin, Toronto’s oldest house, on the grounds of the Canadian National Exhibition; and Eversley Church, on Dufferin Street north of King City. Society Wins Award 5.11.2011
We are very pleased to announce that on Oct 4, the YPHS received the 2011 Community Heritage Award for the North York Community Council area. This award is open to one volunteer community-based organization in each of the four Community Council areas as defined by Toronto City Council. The organization must be currently active, and have either initiated or completed a significant activity that promotes, protects or preserves cultural or natural heritage in its specific Community Council area.
The jury felt the importance of the Society's actions, and the collections of stories it has documented and kept alive, contribute significantly to Toronto’s historical memory. YPHS President Audrey Fox and board members Ken Carter and John Marshall represented the society at the nominees' reception; Audrey accepted the award on behalf of the society. The very enjoyable evening included an engaging speaker (Cameron Bailey), a great MC (Mary Ito) and best of all, chance to meet and network with like-minded heritage advocates.
